Travelling by motorhome on winter sports!
If there's one way to add a cool twist to your motorhome trip, it's by taking your motorhome on a winter holiday. During the day you set off between the snowy peaks, in the late afternoon you dive into après-ski and at night you doze off in your warm and cosy motorhome. Even if you don't ski, but prefer hiking, cross-country skiing or tobogganing, a winter week in the mountains is recommended. The white scenery, the atmosphere and the beautiful views; going on winter sports with your motorhome sounds like every snow lover's dream!
Winter sports motorhome checklist
A smart motorhome owner sets off well prepared! Especially with a combination of a motorhome and snow, it is important to make the right preparations to avoid unpleasant surprises. To make sure you are as warm as possible - literally and metaphorically - we have compiled a winter sports motorhome checklist for you!
1. Winter tyres
It may seem obvious, but winter tyres are essential and even mandatory in most areas for a motorhome trip in winter. Make sure you carry a pair of good snow chains in addition to winter tyres. These will come in handy when you wake up in the morning among a thick layer of fresh snow. Tip: practice putting on snow chains at home!
2. Ice scrapers and snow shovels
Following tip 1, but certainly not unimportant: be prepared for extreme snowfall or frost! So make sure you have some good scrapers and possibly snow shovels with you so you can remove the layers of snow from your camper in no time. That will save a lot of time as well as searching!
3. Antifreeze
Not only is it important to bring enough antifreeze liquid, it is also important to make sure you bring propane gas. Butane can freeze in freezing weather. We also recommend bringing a hairdryer, which can come in handy when your locks or taps freeze.
4. Outer tent
When skiing, of course your stuff gets wet, and it has to dry somewhere eventually. Therefore, consider bringing a winter-proof awning so you have enough space to store all your wet gear. Not up for this? Then some motorhome sites have special drying areas, so you can hang up all your wet clothes there and let them dry. What we do not recommend is putting your ski gear outside to ‘dry’ overnight. They might freeze and break, and you'll have cold feet all day!
Pistes for all levels
Between the highest peaks of the Black Forest, Germany's largest forested area, lies ski resort Feldberg at around 1,200 metres altitude. With 29 kilometres of slopes at all levels and altitudes, this small but fine area is ideal for beginners and families alike. Ski resort Feldberg is split into two parts. On one side, you ski right between the snow-covered trees, while on the other, the precisely treeless slopes provide panoramic views of the surroundings. If you do not ski, but prefer to cross-country ski through the landscape, you can also get around with dozens of kilometres of trails here. Exhausted on the long skis? Then settle down at one of the cosy mountain huts to enjoy culinary - and compared to the Alps cheap - local power food, so that at the end of the ski day you still have enough energy left to have a last drink in the bar!
Near the Feldberg ski area, spend the night at the motorhome stopover Altglashütten in Feldberg, at Camping Bankenhof in Titisee or in Todtnau.

Austria's largest ski paradise
Spread over five regions, Ski Amadé gives you access to 760 kilometres of slopes with just one ski pass. You certainly won't get bored here! As Austria's largest ski paradise, both beginners and advanced skiers, and everything in between, can enjoy the mountains of Ski Amadé. Are you travelling with the kids? They can take a ski class up the mountain and hurtle down through the snowpark, while you seek out the challenge yourself on the red slopes. Prefer to take it easy? With 275 kilometres of blue slopes, this area is also perfect for the relaxed skier. The real daredevils, on the other hand, can indulge themselves at the top of the various black pistes, where you will also enjoy vast views over the peaks of Salzburgerland and Styria. So there is something for everyone! In the afternoon, you can enjoy a delicious winter sports meal on the terrace in the sun: a pint of beer, a pan of Tiroler Gröstl and a plate of Kaiserschmarrn to end the day sweetly, after which you can tie up your skis again and make the après-ski unsafe at the end of the day. If that's not winter sports...
Ski Amadé's ski resorts are spread across several villages. You can therefore easily spend the night in centrally located places, such as Tauerncamping Lerchenhof in Radstadt, motorhome stopover Am Traunsee in Ebensee or Obersteghof in Maria Alm.
