Celebrate winter in Sauerland!
Sauerland is a region in the western part of Germany, which lends itself perfectly for a winterly weekend away. Whether you like skiing or snowboarding down the slope, want to go out hiking through the snowy landscape or just enjoy the sun with a cup of hot chocolate on a terrace; Sauerland has it all! Read on to discover where you can go and where you can stay the night with your motorhome!
Winterberg
Perhaps the most well-known winter destination in Sauerland is Winterberg. This cosy town has a lot to offer to all kinds of travellers. With 27 kilometres of slopes, you can fill your days sliding down the slopes of Wintersport Arena Sauerland at multiple levels. The altitude of the region is not too high – between 500 and 800 metres above sea level – and therefore hiking paths are perfect for those who enjoy a good walk through the snowy hills, but are not a fan of climbing too much. Do make sure to make a stop at one of the cute mountain chalets, where you can enjoy some hot chocolate and a traditional meal before hiking back to the town. Do you want to really immerse yourself in full relax mode? Then pay a visit to one of the spas or wellnesses in town!
For the full winter experience, you can go snowshoe hiking. For this activity, you wear snow shoes that can help you hike to the deepest end of Winterberg’s nature, far away from the noise of everyday life. Moving yourself through the sometimes centimetres deep snow requires some stamina, but snowshoe hiking is an extraordinary activity that you will remember for the rest of your life!
In Winterberg, you can spend the night at Campingplatz Winterberg or at Wohnmobilpark Winterberg.

Diemelsee
The lake Diemelsee is surrounded by wide valleys, deep forests and some picturesque villages. In other words: a diverse destination for nature and culture enthusiasts! Hiking around the lake is highly recommended to those whose breaths are taken away by stunning views over the water and hills. Especially when the décor has turned white through snow, prepare yourself for breathtaking views over the area. The magical touch that the Diemelsee gets in winter is truly unrecognisable. The villages around the lake lend themselves for a nice stroll along historical houses and past cosy terraces. When the sun is shining, make sure to sit down at one of the terraces to enjoy the atmosphere, or go inside a café to warm up when temperatures decrease!
You can park your motorhome in Diemelsee at Wohnmobilstellplatz Diemelsee or Campingpark Hohes Bad, or in the near town of Korbach at Wohnmobilhafen Hansestadt Korbach.

Schmallenberg
The municipality of Schmallenberg consists of 83 villages and communities, and houses about 25.000 people. It is mostly the conviviality and cosiness that charms this municipality and there is plenty to do in and outside the villages. With a long history and 9 museums spread over the communities, Schmallenberg is the ideal place to educate yourself about the town and the Sauerland area. If you prefer being outside – despite the cold winter weather – make sure to tie your skis or snowboard under, as there are multiple slopes in Schmallenberg. Are you not a fan of skiing or snowboarding? Further options for physical activity in the snow are cross-country skiing or going up the mountain by lift and tobogganing down the slope. As Schmallenberg forms the border of the Rothaar mountains, beautiful hiking paths can also be found just outside the village’s centre.
The cosy municipality of Schmallenberg is home to various motorhome stopovers, including Freizeitwelt Sauerland and Almhütte Schanze.
- When Sauerland is covered in snow, even the kids can fully enjoy themselves!
Attendorn
Attendorn is a small village, but it recognises world-fame through its well-known Atta Hӧhle. This stalactite cave was discovered in 1907 and has been visited by millions of tourists from all over the world in the past decades. As one of the largest (about 6000 meters) and most beautiful dripstone caves in Germany, the Atta Hӧhle needs to be on your Sauerland-bucketlist. A 45-minute tour through the cave brings you 500 to 600 meters deep into the Atta Hӧhle, where you will find stalactite, small water ponds and so-called ‘limestone curtains’, which are unique in their sort. The Atta Hӧhle is also the house of bats, which you may see or hear when walking through the cave. Make sure to dress warm, as the temperature inside the cave is about 9°C.
If you stay longer in Attendorn, make sure to explore the region too! A good tip is to go to Aussichtsplattform Biggeblick, where you will have a wide view over the Biggesee. Truly special!
At motorhome stopover Atta Höhle in Attendorn, you park next to the entrance of the cave. A bit further away from the village’s centre, you can stay at Wohnmobilstellplatz Wanderreiten-Repetal.
- When exploring Sauerland, make sure to look out for wildlife such as deer!
