The fruit grows, the flowers colour the streets and the longest day of the year arrives: June is the month when all over Europe summer arrives. With great festivals! In the Betuwe region, for instance, the annual fruit harvest starts with accompanying festivities, the saints are honoured in Lisbon during the Festas dos Santos Populares and the Spaniards celebrate the beginning of summer during the midsummer night El Noche de San Juan! In short: wherever you travel with your motorhome in Europe in June, there's something going on everywhere!
Celebrate the start of the fruit harvest in the Betuwe
The Betuwe is also known as the fruit garden of the Netherlands and we understand why! With a rich array of orchards, this region is the centre of fruit growing in the Netherlands. And you can experience that for yourself too! In the month of June, several festivities take place to celebrate the start of the fruit harvest again. On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 June, for instance, you can go on the Betuwe Garden Route. Here, special gardens and orchards are opened to the public to admire, two of which are located in Tiel. Stroll through beautiful nature, take in the scents and colours and enjoy a beautiful part of the Netherlands.
Do you like to go out by bike? The Gejo Betuwse Toertocht will take place on Saturday 29 June! Over picturesque dykes and polder roads, you will cycle through the beautiful countryside, where you will also cross cherry orchards. The tour starts in Tiel, after which you will cover a distance of 50, 80 or 120 kilometres before returning to Tiel. A unique experience to discover the beautiful Betuwe! If you are more into hiking, the possibilities are also endless! Walk, for example, on one of the Klompenpaden paths: a combination of historical paths, unpaved roads and farmland. The Heinsepad, Batouwepad and Lauwsepad are highly recommended. Just make sure you put on sturdy shoes!
Spending the night in the Betuwe can be done at several places, for example at Parking Waalkade in Tiel, Jachthaven de Helling in Culemborg or in Huissen.
- Make sure you head to the Betuwe in June and enjoy the activities surrounding the fruit harvest!
Honour the saints at the Festas dos Santos Populares in Lisbon
The Festivals of Popular Saints, as the Festas dos Santos Populares are called, take place all over Portugal, but Lisbon hosts the largest. These Festas de Lisboa have a long history of celebrating Saint Anthony. Although the festivities last throughout June, the most important day is 13 June, the anniversary of St Anthony's death. On the Avenida da Liberdade in the evening of 12 June, the Marchas Populares parade takes place, with different groups from all the city's neighbourhoods dancing through the streets according to a specific theme. There is traditional music, food and drink and, of course, lots of dancing! In the cosy Alfama district, various pimba bands perform and you can enjoy the traditional cabbage soup caldo verde, grilled sardines and Portuguese beers and wines. In the Bica, Bairro Alto, Castelo and Mouraria neighbourhoods, too, the streets are decorated with flags and the Alfacinhas, the inhabitants of Lisbon, celebrate. Spend the night at Lisboa Camping.
Although you won't be short of exercise in Lisbon - as the city is built on seven hills - the area lends itself perfectly to beautiful walks and bike rides. You can cycle along marked paths through eucalyptus forests and vineyards or along the coast. A cycling must is the ecopista over the old railway embankment from Évora to Herdade da Sempre Nova, a green route in the Alentejo region, south of Lisbon. The Água da Prata hiking trail takes you along part of the Évora aqueduct and immerses you in the region's history. A unique experience to discover this beautiful country on foot! In this area, park your motorhome in Évora, at the nearby motorhome stopovers Fita Preta or Azeite Amor é Cego.
- During the Água da Prata hiking trail, you will pass by the Évora aqueduct!
Kick off summer during El Noche de San Juan in Spain
On the night of 23-24 June, the whole of Spain is celebrating! After all, that is when the beginning of summer - and with it, the happiness of life - is celebrated. El Noche de San Juan is about health, friends and family, a celebration of the seasons and the power of the sun, with fire and water taking centre stage. On beaches across Spain, bonfires, or hogueras, are lit in the evening and families and friends gather to toast the start of summer over wine and local specialities. Traditionally, furniture, textbooks and full notebooks are thrown into the fire, representing purification. After jumping over the fire several times and making three wishes, Spaniards walk backwards arm in arm into the sea, to face a new year refreshed. In short: a traditional festival that you must have experienced once.
Spain's big cities each have their own traditions. In Málaga, for instance, the music is turned up a few notches and firecrackers and fireworks make for a banging start to summer. At the beach in Málaga, stay overnight at motorhome stopover Area Malaga Beach or Peñon del Cuervo. In Catalonia, the festive night ends with the cake Coca de Sant Juan and a glass of Cava. Park your motorhome at Blanes or at Autocaravanning Palamós in Palamós. On the Alicante beach, stay overnight at Playa de Saladares, from where you can easily attend the fiestas and traditions of the Valencia region!
- Don't forget to enjoy the views you have in Palamós, for example!
