Fall in love with undiscovered Salzburg!
Those who think of Austria will mainly think of mountains, winter sports and Vienna. But this country also has several undiscovered treasures, of which Salzburg is one. Perhaps the terms Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, The Sound of Music or the Salzburg Festival mean something to you? Read on and find out why you should definitely visit this cosy city!
Discover Salzburg's old Altstadt
Although Salzburg's history dates to prehistoric times, since the 16th century the city has been shaping up to be how we know it today. The Baroque period of the 16th and 17th centuries has therefore been one of the most important eras for Salzburg. In 1756, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was laid in the cradle here and not long after, Salzburg was on the musical map. Although Mozart worked and lived in various places in Europe, his name as one of the most influential legends of classical music has always remained in good honour in his hometown. This is still evident when you stroll through the Altstadt. Be sure to take a look at Mozartplatz, one of the city's most beautiful squares. From there, stroll down Getreidegasse, Salzburg's shopping street where not only big brands are housed, but also Mozart's birthplace. In this busy but authentic street, also pay attention to the adjacent narrow alleys, which lead you to beautiful quiet courtyards!
Salzburg Cathedral is also a real eye-catcher among the historic Baroque buildings in the old town. Built in 774, the cathedral has been targeted by bombing several times and has already been re-consecrated twice after being rebuilt. As the city's most famous and imposing church, the Dom should definitely be on your Salzburg bucketlist, although the many other smaller churches are also recommended!

Experience the influence of classical music
Are you a lover of classical music and want to discover more than just Mozart? Then you should visit Salzburg in July or August! During these months, the Salzburg Festival takes place, a musical festival known worldwide. With opera, drama and concerts in both the halls of the Salzburg Festival House and on the streets, this festival is accessible to all ages and interests. For more than a hundred years, Salzburg has been the epicentre of classical music during the summer months, so the Salzburg Festival is definitely something you must have experienced once in a lifetime!
Outside the lines of the Altstadt
You can also have a great time outside the city's old town. For example, visit the Festung Hohensalzburg, a stone castle on top of the Festungsberg. Excellent above the city, this castle offers a great view over Salzburg's old town. There is a cable car going up, but of course you can also walk there yourself!
Are you interested in musicals and films? Then visit Schloss Mirabell and the Mirabellgarten. The imposing palace reflects the prosperity of the 16th and 17th centuries and in the gardens, you will wander through the set of The Sound of Music. In fact, the legendary ‘Do-Re-Mi’ scene was filmed here! The Stift Nonnberg nunnery also got a place in the film, and although it is not open to the public, you can visit the accompanying Maria Himmelfahrt church.

Taste the Austrian cuisine
A city visit naturally includes sampling the local specialities. Salzburg is also known as the beer capital of Austria, so a fresh beer from the brewery cannot be missed during your visit to this city. The history of beer brewing goes back some six centuries, but today there are still ten beer houses active in brewing their own beer. After a day in the city, enjoy such refreshment in one of the cosy Biergartens!
Salzburg is also the right place for coffee! The Austrians are known to make their coffee a ‘moment’ and often enjoy it with a piece of cake. Order a coffee in one of the many coffee houses and taste the sweet Salzburg specialities: the praline-pistachio Mozartkugeln, a piece of Salzburger Nockerl or the pancake-like Kaiserschmarrn.
Among all these specialities, one drink stands out, probably unexpectedly: Red Bull. This energy drink also has its origins in Salzburg, which can be seen in, for example, the name of the football club FC Red Bull Salzburg.
Want to experience a unique evening back in time? Then visit one of the Mozart Dinner Concerts. While enjoying an 18th-century dinner in the Baroque Hall of the St Peter's Monastery, you will enjoy Mozart's classical music and imagine yourself briefly in Salzburg's history!
