La dolce vita in northern Italy!
Italy, the land of wine, olive oil and pasta, has much more to offer than most motorhome owners might think. High rocky mountains, clear blue lakes and romantic villages, taking your motorhome through northern Italy will make you experience it all. La dolce vita is what it is also called. This motorhome route through the northern regions of Trentino-South Tyrol and Veneto takes you to the most beautiful places in the country. Do you want to experience the good life in Italian style? Then quickly read on!
Where will the trip take you?
In the far north of Italy you will find the regions of Trentino-South Tyrol and Veneto, both on the border with Austria. The history of these regions is also reflected in their names: until World War I, Trentino-South Tyrol was part of Austria and Veneto is named after its capital Venice. You will therefore still regularly encounter Austrian influences in both regions. Many locals speak German as well as Italian, and you can taste the most delicious Austrian dishes with an Italian touch.
The northern part of Italy is a great place to travel to by motorhome throughout the entire year. In winter, the Dolomites are a popular winter sports destination, but if you don't want to be on skis, you can also go on beautiful snowy walks. In the summer months, many ski lifts are open for hikers and mountain bikers, and you can enjoy a delicious meal overlooking the rocky mountains in one of the many mountain huts. If you are in the area, be sure to visit Venice. With its winding canals and many bridges, this charming city should have a place on your bucket list!
Stop 1: Braies
The first stop on this motorhome trip through northern Italy is at Lago di Braies. This clear blue lake is surrounded by forested mountains and its bright colour stands out against the high grey mountains. On and around the lake there is plenty to do for all ages. You can hike around the lake on a relatively easy trail in about an hour and a half. Don't forget to bring your camera, because you will capture the most beautiful pictures from the waterside! Would you rather go out on the water? Then hire a paddle boat at the old iconic boathouse, which is ideal for stunning mountain views. If you want a magical experience of Lago di Braies, it is recommended to visit the lake early in the morning. The rising sunlight gives a beautiful reflection on the crystal blue water, a true gift to the eye! From motorhome stopover P2 in Braies, you can walk to the lake in 15 minutes.
- Even with not so good weather, Lago di Braies is beautiful!
Stop 2: Misurina
From Lago di Braies, you'll drive in about an hour to your next stop: Misurina. Here you will wake up to breathtaking views of the rock formation Tre Cime di Lavaredo! These three rocky summits are also called the Drei Zinnen and symbolise the Dolomites. Do you want to get to know this beautiful area? In car park P camper Rifugio Auronzo, you can stay the night at the foot of the area, from where several hiking routes start. The real daredevils can go on a guided climbing route, but there are also easier trails for flat walking enthusiasts. Be sure to take a break at the Dreizinnenhütte and enjoy a delicious Italian pasta overlooking the rocks. From the motorhome stopover, you can hike in 30 minutes to the Cadini di Misurina viewpoint, where you will take the best photos of the famous mountains. Would you rather have some variety? Then visit one of Misurina's surrounding villages, stroll through the cosy streets and enjoy the good life on a sunny terrace.

Stop 3: Calalzo di Cadore
About 50 kilometres south from Misurina is the town of Calalzo di Cadore. The route of just over an hour through the mountains is already a treat, but once you arrive in the village you will be surprised with even more beauty. For hikers and cyclists who love mountains but prefer not to climb and descend too much, Calalzo di Cadore is a must-visit! In the surroundings of this cosy historical village, you will not only find plenty of altitude differences, but also a large number of flatter hiking and cycling routes. Take a beautiful walk along Lago di Cadore and learn more about the power of nature, or cycle along the lake to one of the other villages in the Cadore region. On the undiscovered and peaceful Lake Lagole, you can relax to the fullest. Explore the lake on a paddle boat, or cast your fishing rod over the clear blue water from the banks. When the high season starts, the centre of Moena becomes a pedestrian area where local markets take up the space. Be sure to sample local products, such as the cheese Puzzone di Moena or the famous mineral water from nearby San Pellegrino. The authentic town centre is also rich in shops and definitely worth strolling through. There is also plenty to do in the surrounding area. In half an hour you can drive to Lago di Carezza, a small crystal blue lake surrounded by trees and mountains.
