Picturesque English villages, white beaches, rugged cliffs, and stunning natural landscapes; your next motorhome-trip should definitely lead you to the south of England. The southern part of this country is incredibly beautiful and will undoubtedly surprise you. With this motorhome route, you'll discover tourist destinations like Cornwall and Brighton, as well as some lesser-known spots in the region. So, what are you waiting for?! Get ready and join us on a journey to England!
Day 1: Dover
On the first day of this motorhome-trip, you have time to explore the beautiful Dover. This city is located on the east coast of England and is particularly known for its phenomenal white chalk cliffs. These chalk cliffs are as high as 110 meters! Granted, you'll get the best views of the cliffs from the ferry from France. But taking a walk along the cliffs when you're in Dover is equally remarkable.
Don't forget to take a moment to visit Dover Castle along the way. This beautiful castle overlooks the white cliffs. There are several interesting tours available through the castle, where you can learn more about its history and the region! After a lovely first day, park your motorhome in Dover. Here, you can relax and prepare for the next day.
- The white chalk cliffs in Dover are the region's most popular attraction!
Day 2: Dover – Brighton (84 miles/135 km)
On the second day, you'll drive for just under 3 hours along the south coast of England from Dover to Brighton. Want to make a stop along the way? Then consider visiting Hastings! This typical English town boasts a fine sandy beach, a cozy harbor, and a historic center. What more could you ask for?
Brighton is a slightly more popular (read: busier) destination in England, yet it's definitely worth a visit. This trendy seaside resort has remained relatively undiscovered in the Netherlands, but for the English, especially Londoners, Brighton is the ultimate holiday destination in their own country. Stroll through the charming streets, visit the famous Brighton pier, and savor the finest coffee in one of the many cafes! Stay overnight at the end of the day in Newhaven, at West Side Promenade. This motorhome stopover is just a short drive from Brighton, allowing you to avoid the hustle and bustle of the city.
- Take a pleasant stroll along Brighton's beaches!
Day 3: Brighton – Bournemouth (96 miles/154 km)
From Brighton, we leisurely drive to the next seaside resort: Bournemouth. Stroll along the expansive beaches or admire the view from above on the pier's Ferris wheel! From Bournemouth, you can also easily visit the Jurassic Coast, perhaps the most beautiful stretch of coastline in the entire country! In this stunning area, you can enjoy many beautiful walks. For example, hike from Lulworth Cove to Durdle Door. The endpoint of this hiking trail is Durdle Door, a natural limestone arch that looks fantastic in photos. This hiking route is 6.5 kilometres long, but allow some extra time to enjoy the views along the way.
You can stay overnight at Orchard Lakes, near Bournemouth.
- You can take the most beautiful photos at Durdle Door!
Day 4: Bournemouth – Dartmoor & Plymouth (127 miles/204 km)
On the fourth day of this route, you have a choice: would you like to discover another coastal town or would you prefer to immerse yourself in nature?
From Bournemouth, you'll head towards Plymouth, which takes approximately 3 hours. Plymouth is a historic port city with a charming center and a beautiful coastline. You'll find everything you could want from an English seaside town here. You can stay overnight at Lee Mill Services, located just a few kilometres away from Plymouth.
From the motorhome stopover, you can also easily visit another beautiful destination: Dartmoor National Park! In this national park, you'll find stunning vistas and several beautiful waterfalls. It's a great place for picturesque walks!
Day 5: Plymouth – Cornwall (54 miles/87 km)
When you depart from Plymouth, it's just a short drive to Cornwall. This popular region is bursting with fishing villages, harbor towns, hidden beaches, and stunning natural scenery. Visit the secluded Pedn Vounder Beach, with its crystal-clear waters and rugged rocks. Or enjoy the tranquility at the remote Lantic Bay. However, note that this bay is only accessible via a steep hiking trail.
Cornwall is a true surfing paradise. At the popular resort town of Newquay, you can also try your hand at the fantastic waves! Not into surfing? Then you can also hike a section of the South West Coastal Path from Newquay. This walking route spans 1000 kilometres along the rugged coast of South England. You'll undoubtedly be amazed by the breathtaking views along this route! Also, consider visiting Mevagissey. This charming harbor town is quintessentially Cornwall! Mevagissey is often described as the most picturesque town in all of England. You can stay with your motorhome at Willow Car & Coach Park, located in the center of this beautiful town.
Feeling like relaxing on the beach? Check out Praa Sands. This expansive beach is perfect for a day of relaxation and - you guessed it - surfing! You can stay with your motorhome right on the beach at Sydney Cove Car Park. If you want to see more of Cornwall, we recommend taking a trip from Praa Sands to St Ives. Here you'll find crystal-clear waters and white sand. Not only can you swim and sunbathe here, but you can also spot seals, dolphins, and basking sharks. Additionally, St Ives is an important place for artists, so be sure to visit one of the many galleries that St Ives has to offer.
- Cornwall is quintessentially English!
Day 6: Cornwall – Westward Ho! (80 miles/128 km)
On the sixth day of the motorhome-trip, you'll drive from Cornwall towards Westward Ho!. Yes, you read it right: the exclamation mark really belongs in the name Westward Ho!. This place is one of the two places in the world with an exclamation mark in its name, which already makes this destination special.
Westward Ho! is located between Hartland Devon Heritage Coast and North Devon AONB, two beautiful natural areas on the English coast. Discover the stunning green cliffs of these natural areas and relax in the evening at the motorhome stopover Main Car Park.
Day 7: Westward Ho! – Bath (128 miles/206 km)
It's a bit of a drive on the second-to-last day of this motorhome-trip, but the destination of this day is undoubtedly worth it. To relax and take it all in after an impressive motorhome-trip, we're making a mini-city trip to Bath! This beautiful and compact city is known for its Roman baths, where you can naturally relax. It's good to know that these baths are a popular attraction, so it's wise to reserve your tickets in advance.
On the last day of the motorhome-trip, you'll drive back from Bath towards Dover, which takes about 3.5 hours. After this drive, you'll board the ferry back to France or Belgium, and you can look back on a fantastic journey with a lot of new memories!
- Bath has wonderful architecture in addition to wonderful Roman baths!
