Motorhome route Scandinavia: nature, culture and adventure!

A lot of motorhome owners dream of a motorhome trip through Scandinavia. The extensive forests, untouched nature and gorgeous coastline make Scandinavia a dream destination. So, if you get the chance to visit Scandinavia, you should definitely take it! We get that it can be overwhelming to plan a roadtrip through Scandinavia since this area is absolutely huge. In this article, we'll help you plan an amazing motorhome trip through Denmark, Sweden and Norway!

Before you head out, it is important to read up on the various rules concerning camping and transport in Scandinavia.

If you want to enjoy everything Scandinavia has to offer, we advise you to travel during the summer months. During this time of year, the temperatures will be pleasant and you will have the highest chance of sunshine. Besides, the days are very long, so you'll have extra time to enjoy all of the sights!

Wild camping is allowed in most places in Scandinavia. However: you cannot park within 150 metres distance of personal property. Also, if you're travelling with a motor vehicle - like a motorhome - you cannot go offroad. This means that you cannot take your motorhome off the beaten paths. So, where can you actually stay? In this article, we'll also give some tips for various motorhome stopovers near all the sights, so planning your motorhome trip becomes even easier!

Öresund bridge Denmark Sweden

- Good to know: on the Öresund bridge, the bridge that connects Denmark and Sweden, you'll have to pay toll.

Copenhagen (day 1 & 2)

We start our motorhome trip in the capital of Denmark: Copenhagen. This city is good to visit in a couple of days, which is why it is the perfect starting point of this trip. Besides, from mainland Europe, you can easily get to Copenhagen in a day or two.

There's lots to experience in Copenhagen. You should definitely visit Nyhavn, the most colourful harbour in town. The amusement park Tivoli is an absolute recommendation as well. This amusement park, that is also one of the oldest amusement parks of the world, is in the centre of Copenhagen.

Do you want to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time? Take the bike! Copenhagen is the perfect city to explore by bike. On your way, pay a visit to the Little Mermaid, and discover all the gorgeous sights of the city. Park your motorhome at Københavns Autocamper Park.

- In the colourful Nyhavn, you can have a great time at one of the many cafés.

Skåne (day 2 to 4)

When you take the Öresundbridge from Copenhagen to Sweden, you'll quickly enter the Skåne region. This region, in the south of Sweden, is known for its beautiful beaches and stunning nature. You can completely relax here!

Stay close to the coast, at Ekogården. This motorhome stopover has all the facilities one could wish for! Would you rather stay in a city? You can also do this in Skåne. Whether you want to visit Malmö or Ystad, you will definitely enjoy yourself here! Wherever you will stay in this region, don't forget to participate in a real Swedish fika. A fika is a Swedish coffee break, traditionally with cinnamon roll, and Skåne might be the best place in Sweden to enjoy it! Bon appetit!

Stockholm (day 4 & 5)

The Swedish capital is a must during this trip. In this city, you will definitely enjoy yourself! Pay a visit to the world-famous ABBA museum, and don't forget to take a look at the original city centre: Gamla Stan.

Want to get into nature? You should definitely visit the archipelago of Stockholm , then! Just outside of the city are about 30.000 small islands where you can take a breather. The best option is to take the ferry to the archipelago. There are multiple day-trips available, so you do not have to worry about sleeping on one of the islands, you can easily return back to the motorhome stopover in the evening.

You can stay with your motorhome at Tantolundens Husbilscamping Stockholm. From this motorhome stopover, you'll be in the centre of the city in no time.

- The historical centre of Stockholm, Gamla Stan, is the most important sight of the city.

Varmland (day 5 to 7)

A little while west from Stockholm lies the Varmland region. As soon as you drive through this region, you'll realise why it got the nickname ''the lake area''. This region is home to over 10.000 lakes! Besides lakes, you'll find beautiful forests and rolling hills here.

The biggest lake in this region is Lake Vänern. This lake is also the second biggest lake in Europe! Discover the lake by canoe and enjoy the peace and quiet. You can stay with your motorhome directly next to the lake at Getingbergets Badplats. Another recommendation is National Park Tiveden, located in between Lake Vättern and Lake Vänern. Here, you can make several beautiful hikes. Stay with your motorhome at Jonsboda Café.

Fancy another type of activity? Take a look at the Torsby skitunnel. This indoor nordic skiing track is the place to learn how to do nordic skiing. The tunnel is open all year and, since it is indoor, the snow is perfect here all year round! You can stay with your motorhome close to the tunnel at Torsby.

- Lake Vänern in Sweden is home to many animals, such as bears, wolves, moose and lynxes.

Oslo (day 7 & 8)

From Varmland, we get back into the city. The next two days, you will explore Oslo! This lively city is one of the most walkable cities on the planet. So don't hesitate to walk around on your adventure in Oslo.

Culture enthusiasts can have a look at the Munch museum, a museum dedicated to the Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The Vigelandpark is definitely worth a visit as well. This park is the life's work of artist Gustav Vigeland, and one of the biggest sculpture parks in the world.

Hungry? Go to the Mathallen Food Hall. You'll find loads of amazing restaurants, cafés and bars here, some will even have some typically Norwegian dishes! Stay close to the centre with your motorhome at Sjølyst Marina.

- Oslo is an amazing city to explore by foot.

Innlandet (day 8 to 10)

The name says it all, Innlandet is Norway's inland region. We finally head into Norwegion nature now! Stay at Spiterstulen, close to the Jotunheimen National Park. This is a mountain range where you can hike, bike, or do any other outdoor-activity you're interested in. Also, you'll find some of the highest peaks of Norway here.

Fancy a long hike? Consider walking to Galdhøpiggen. This is one the most popular hikes in Norway and brings you along stunning lakes and mountains. What's more fun: Lom Stavkyrkje. This age-old stave church is one of the biggest of the country, and absolutely worth visiting.

- In Jotunheimen National Park you'll find the highest peaks of Northern-Europe!

Vestland (day 10 to 13)

The region Vestland stretches out along the entire coastline of Western-Norway. With its many fjords, beaches and mountains, this is one of the most beautiful natural areas of Norway. Stay at Iglandsvik Marina if you want to stay close to the beach.

Curious for one of the most popular sights of Norway? Go to Trolltunga! A lot of travellers have already taken a picture on this rock. This spectacular cliff towers over the Ringedallake. The tough hike, of about 11 kilometres long, is just as beautiful as the view at the destination! Before you start the hike, make sure that you're fit and have waterproof clothes with you; you never know what the weather's going to do! You can stay with your motorhome close to Trolltunga at Odda Bobilcamp.

There are still many other activities in Vestland. For example, you could explore Bergen! This city is the second-biggest city in Norway and offers some fantastic views over - you've guessed it - mountains. Stay with your motorhome at Bobilparkering Slettebakken.

The south of Norway (day 13 to 15)

We leave Vestland, but that does not mean that there is no nature left to explore! Walk to the Lysefjord, a 40 kilometre long fjord with enormous cliffs on both sides. Admire this stunning fjord from the water on a ferry, or take a walk to Preikestolen. This is a rock plateau that offers a stunning view over the Lysefjord. Would you rather stay directly next to a fjord? Then, park your motorhome at Hålandsosen. This motorhome stopover is located directly next to the Erfjord. This means that you'll have amazing views over the mountains and the water!

We end our trip through Norway in the southernmost town of the country: Kristiansand. Here, you can enjoy long, sunny summer days. Besides, this is the place where you will ultimately board the ferry to go to Denmark. During your stay in Kristiansand, you can park your motorhome at Kongsgard Bobilparkering.

Lego-fanatics can head to the world-famous Lego Land! This theme park will definitely amuse you, most definitely if you're travelling with kids. Park your motorhome at Billund Trav P4, and you'll be in the most fun rides within no time!
