Sun, sea, beach; perfect for a summer holiday! But would you also like to experience this in winter and escape the bleak winter weather in Europe's northern countries? Then head to the South-Portuguese Algarve! Here, the sun makes overtime and you can enjoy a pleasant 19°C. With beautiful natural areas and cute villages, you won't get bored here. This winter motorhome itinerary shows the best (undiscovered) places in the Algarve!
Explore Monte Gordo
The town Monte Gordo is in the east of the Algarve and often gets forgotten because of the big brothers like Albufeira and Faro, but that is completely unfair. During the summer this sea town gets more beach goers these days and even in the winter you can enjoy yourself in this town. You can enjoy seafood on the boulevard, something this former fishing town is no stranger to, and stroll through the cozy center past lovely shops and terraces. Do you enjoy going away on your bicycle? Then you're also in the right place here, because with mostly flat terrain, you can enjoy touring the surrounding towns on your bicycle. Cycle in 30 minutes to the famous and historical Castelo de Castro Marim in the nearby Castro Marim or cross the border with your motorhome to enjoy a day in the Spanish Sevilla.
In the area of Monte Gordo you can stay the night in Altura or in Castro Marim.

Strolling through the narrow streets of Silves
From Monte Gordo you will drive in direction of the west in about one and a half hour to Silves. Feel free to exit the freeway during your drive to enjoy a drive through the beautiful landscape of the Algarve in the winter sun! Once you have arrived in Silves, you will find yourself in a paradise of culture and architecture. As the former capital of the Algarve, this place has a long and rich history that dates back to the Middle Ages. For a journey back in time, visit the Castello de Silves, an imposing castle that is considered one of the beautiful in Portugal with its Islamic and Moorish influences. Not only the castle itself, but also the views surrounding the castle are worthwhile, because with a location on the highest top of the city the Castelo de Silves offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings. An authentic South-Portuguese winter destination
Who is looking for an authentic South-Portuguese winter destination, must go to Lagos. Although the place is getting more known these days, this cute little town still exudes charm, calmness and purity. Walking through the picturesque streets you can spot azulejos, decorative tiles stuck to the facades of the historic white buildings. The old center of Lagos is compact but does house igrejas that certainly are worth a visit. A walk through the city is not complete without stopping at the churches of Santa Maria and the Santo António. Still want to get out of town and explore the surrounding area? Hikers can enjoy the nearby nature reserve Ponta da Piedade, that with its rock formations, cliffs and caves bordering the Atlantic Ocean have been labeled a true natural wonder.
Lagos is about a 40 kilometer drive from Silves. You can stay the night at motorhome stopovers Pingo Doce Lagos – Marina, Lidl or BP tank station.

The end of the world
From Lagos you can drive to Sarges in about an hour, the last and also the Southernmost stop of this motorhome route. Sagres is near the southwestern most point of mainland Europe and by the sea here it is in one word: beautiful. With nothing other then sea before you and somewhere far beyond the horizon the next continent, will it be the nearby Cabo de Sāo Vincente with its famous lighthouse also called ‘the end of the world’. So, a magical sunset is sure to be experienced here! Sarges itself is according to some not comparable to other, more busy seaside towns in the Algarve. A friendly, quiet but cozy atmosphere separates this small town from other places in the area. For a delicious meal with seafood, you’ve come to the right place, because of a history in fishing, they know in Sarges what kind of goodies they can make with sea snails and mussels!
