Back to the Middle Ages in Graz!
At the southern foot of the Austrian Alps lies Graz, the country's second-largest city. Under the prominence of cities like Vienna, Salzburg and Innsbruck, Graz is often forgotten, but it is a very cosy and, above all, interesting city! Whether you go on a city trip, take a motorhome tour through Austria or are just passing by, you can enjoy yourself easily for a few days in Graz. In this blog you will therefore read what to see, eat, do and, not completely unimportant, where to stay!
Back to the Middle Ages with a modern twist
Although Graz is mostly known as the capital of the state of Styria, it is also the city with the largest remaining medieval city centre in Europe. This lends itself perfectly to a day of cultural exploration! Wandering through the winding streets, you will pass the most beautiful historical buildings with distinctive orange-red roof tiles. Among the baroque façades and colourful flower boxes, you will also find some outstanding gems. Among these is the 15th-century Graz Cathedral, a rather small church for such a big city, but no less attractive for it. Be sure to take a look inside, because while the Dom may be somewhat deceiving on the outside in terms of beauty, it makes up for that inside! The Renaissance-style Landhaus and Graz's Burg with its double spiral staircase are also architectural jewels and are not to be missed. For a slightly more modern touch to your stroll, you can also just stay in the Altstadt, as Graz's old town has been given a modern twist in recent years. The neoclassical Rathaus, the imposing Kunsthaus Graz and the classical-modern combination in the Neue Galerie Graz are examples. The River Mur flows through the city and for a special cup of coffee or tasty cocktail on the water, you have to go to the Murinsel Graz. This is a special ‘bridge’, but at the same time an island and a boat in one and in every way a feast for the architectural eye. With all these different styles, a walk through the Old Town can therefore be called interesting and multifaceted, to say the least!
- Stroll at your leisure through the centre of Graz and admire the baroque facades!
Rise to the heights
Graz's eye-catcher par excellence is Schlossberg mountain. There used to be a small castle on top of the mountain, which was the inspiration for Graz's name. Derived from the Slavic word ‘Gradec’, the name Graz was born, meaning ‘small castle’. After attacks by Napoleon, only the bell tower survived, but a climb to Schlossberg is especially worthwhile for its views. You can reach the 473-metre summit in four ways: on foot, via the 260 steps of the Felsensteig, by cable car Schlossbergbahn or within a minute in the Schlossberg Lift. At the top, you will be rewarded with panoramic views of the city and its surroundings! Are you out and about with the children? Inside the Schlossberg, around the Schlossberg Lift, a slide has been built. At a speed of 30 km/h, you will slide down 170 metres and into the caves of the mountain. Just make sure you're not afraid of heights!
- Take the Schlosserbergbahn and enjoy the wonderful view you have at the top!
Taste the flavour of Styria
As the culinary capital of Austria, Graz is the perfect base to sample the flavour of the country and the region of Styria. It is not without reason that this city has been nicknamed the ‘City of Delight’. What makes a visit to Graz complete is a stroll around one of the farmers' markets. Stalls are set up at various places in the city in the morning, selling the tastiest products from small farms in the area. Do you want to put together a delicious meal yourself in the evening? Then be sure to get your groceries at the market, for example at the Kaiser-Josef-market or the Lendplatz-market! It is also great fun to get some tasty snacks at the market and have a picnic in one of the parks in the city. Surrounded by the locals in Graz, you'll find yourself completely immersed in Austrian life! The area around Graz is also called the Tuscany of Austria, because of its many vineyards. Outside the city, you can discover this for yourself, as a 25-kilometre wine route between Ehrenhausen and Leutschach takes you past several wineries. Touring through the hills here, you will taste the flavour of the region and the view over the vast wine fields will certainly not bore you!

In Graz or in the grass?
With a location at the foot of the Alps, Graz is nestled among the hills. This is also an added bonus to this city, because even if you want to alternate your visit with some physical activity, Graz is the perfect holiday destination for you! There are plenty of hiking trails in the area, either just outside the city or from villages a little further away. In typical Austrian fashion, you can stop along the way at one of the cosy mountain huts, where the milk is completely fresh and you can enjoy the tastiest local specialities with stunning views!
