Do you like to go out and search for hidden ‘treasures’ by geocaching? We list the best spots for geocaching in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany as well as a lot of tips for staying overnight in a motorhome. Read on!
What is geocaching?
Many motorhome owners may have no idea, as geocaching has only been growing in popularity for a few years now. Using GPS technology, you search for hidden ‘treasures’ (caches), which can be found anywhere and everywhere. You find these treasures by entering the coordinates of a hiding place on a GPS device or your mobile phone, after which you can start looking. Most caches come in a sealed box, which often contains a logbook you can sign to show that you found the cache. Do you want to make it a bit more special? Then bring a small barter item that you can leave in the box for other geocachers! What makes geocaching so much fun? You are adventurous in nature or in the city and you get to visit places you would otherwise pass by!

Looking for treasures in the Netherlands
With beautiful spring weather on the way, it is time to get outside again! Even in the lower lands of the Netherlands, you can go on an adventure to unique places in nature. 'GSM Verbelst' in Sint-Oedenrode in Brabant, for example, takes you on a cultural quest where there is no shortage of creativity. Also creative are Zeeland's so-called ‘geo-art’ routes, such as the ‘Pigs Trail’ and the ‘Rondje Drol’, which live up to their name and shape on Zeeland's map. Got the hang of geocaching? Then do the ‘Kop van Drenthe Geotour’. With no fewer than 73 geocaches, this route lets you discover the northern part of Drenthe!

On an adventure in Belgium
Although most geocaching locations are hidden in nature, in Bruges you can combine a city trip with a treasure hunt. Right in the centre of this historic city is a treasure hidden under the name ‘RV 5.08: Bruges’. Little tip: look out for the bike! Do you like the challenge of finding a cache? Then the geocache ‘Chez Marie-Hélène’ near Aalbeke is for you! But be prepared for a real quest, which can also involve physical exertion! If you want to go on a geocaching adventure with the kids, drive to Lommel. The route ‘Het Verloren Kabouterdorp’ offers the opportunity for the littlest geocachers to have a good time in nature!

Catching caches in Germany
Germany is one of the most popular countries for geocaching and the Germans can hide treasures like no other. For instance, the most frequently found cache is in Berlin, right in the city centre. Europe's oldest findable treasure is also located around Berlin and bears the name ‘Medieval View’. Finding this geocache will take you back in time. In fact, this treasure was hidden more than 20 years ago! Fans of mountains are also in the right place in Germany, as you will find the geocache ‘Der Weg der Steine’ at an altitude of almost 3,000 metres. With the Zugspitze as the highest mountain in the country, you will therefore also reach a peak – literally – when you find the treasure on this mountain in Bavaria!
