Orléans, a historic city full of culture and nature

Orléans is an old university city in the middle of France, about 130 kilometres south of Paris. It is a city that is often forgotten or that people might heard of because they passed it on their trip to the south. Orléans however is a city with an extensive history and many beautiful sights that connect to it. So, do you want to visit a less obvious place on your next city trip with your motorhome? Or are you making a motorhome journey to the sunny south and you are searching for a stopover that is definitely worth a visit? Then Orléans is the perfect place! Read why in this article.

A rich history

The central square of Orléans is called the ‘Place du Martroi’. This square used to serve as a grain market, but was also a place for the execution of convicts. Today, in the centre of the square, there is an equestrian statue of Joan of Arc (Jeanne d’Arc). This statue was placed in the year 1855 in honour of this remarkable woman, who left an indelible impression on this history city. You can also visit the so-called house of Joan of Arc, a reconstructed place where she was offered a shelter during a siege. In this house you can learn about the Hundred Years War and the sensational role that Joan of Arc played in this. A remarkable experience that lets you view the city from a different point of view!

The cathedral in Orléans, ‘Cathedrale Sainte-Croix’, is a Gothic building with two immense towers overlooking the adjacent square. The beautiful stained glass windows in the church portray the famous story of Joan of Arc, who even prayed at this specific place before she fought against the English in 1429. You can also find extraordinary ruins below the surface with remains of the Cathedral from between the 4th and 11th century! Finally, you shouldn’t forget to look at the uniquely decorated organ. It appears that many find this cathedral very similar to the Notre-Dame in Paris. Are you going to search for the similarities?

Culture and Nature

If you want to go and see some art, Orléans is also an ideal city to enjoy yourself. Across the cathedral lies the Museum of Fine Arts of Orléans, which is famous for its collection of French paintings from the 17th and 18th century. Another exceptional part of the museum that attracts a great amount of tourists, is the large collection of pastel drawings, which is only larger in the Louvre! It is certainly worth to take a look here.

You can also choose to look for some peace at the other side of the river. Here you find a botanical garden, or also called ‘Jardin des Plantes’. Admire the rosarium and the many exotic flower fields which have been laid out there, or stroll along the blossoming sunflowers, tropical banana plants and somewhat overgrown bamboo. If you feel like visiting an even bigger parc a little further from the city centre, you can also visit the ‘Parc Floral de la Source’.  In addition to the several gardens, each with its own theme, there are also some animals here! Be amazed by the butterfly greenhouse, the exotic birds or attend the feeding of the other animals. With a bit of luck the (grand) children can also lend a hand with this…

Just 5 kilometers from the old town, there is a camper village in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin. Click here for more information about this motorhome pitch.
